Wireless technology with the Digital Hearing Aids
In the modern world, we’ve come to rely on mobile phones, tablets and other wireless devices to keep us connected to our family, friends and workplace all day, every day.
 
These devices use wireless technology to transmit signals through the air via receiving points, ultimately delivering messages to the recipient without wires. This wireless technology has changed many things in our daily lives, and Digital hearing aids are no exception
Wireless technology improves hearing aids in two ways:
1.By making it easier to connect with the world around you, as well as your favorite devices, like smartphones
2.By improving how hearing aids connect with each other (modern hearing aids can now deliver sound as a collaborative pair, instead of separately)
Wireless hearing aids are capable of wirelessly communicating with external devices. There are a variety of technologies that make this possible, the most common of which are Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI), frequency modulation (FM) and Bluetooth.
Here, let’s make more introduction for the both Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) and Bluetooth wireless technology for digital hearing aids,which are the most popular wireless technology for hearing aids.
Near Field Magnetic Induction
The Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) is a short-range wireless technology that communicates by a tightly coupled magnetic field among devices. NFMI enables human body friendly, reliable, secure, and power efficient wireless communication. In NFMI communication systems, the modulated signal sent out from a transmitter coil is in the form of a magnetic field.
Advantage:
The built-in parts are small, saving the internal space of the machine.
More energy saving and power saving.
High stability, almost free from interference from other wireless devices.
High security, such as avoiding theft of credit cards.
The close-range connection works very well and is suitable for hearing aids to transmit between ears.
Disadvantages:
The transmission distance is short (20cm), which is not suitable for long distance connection.
Can not directly connect to external devices such as mobile phones, and need to be equipped with conversion devices (such as Bluetooth companion).
 
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a fairly new technology that is changing hearing aids in a big way. Older (but still relatively new) wireless hearing aids on the market are able to pair with Bluetooth devices by utilizing an intermediary device. This device, called a streamer, can translate the Bluetooth signal into a signal that can be picked up by an FM receiver or telecoil. For example, your wireless hearing aid may be connected to a streamer that is then connected via Bluetooth to your cell phone. When you have a phone call, the streamer would indicate the incoming call and allow you to activate the relay of the audio signal directly to your hearing aid.
 
Advantage:
Multiple devices can be connected to overcome the problem of data synchronization.
Low power, convenient for battery-powered equipment.
Can manage data and voice transmission at the same time.
Low latency, suitable for long distance and strong connection.
 
Disadvantages:
The transmission distance is easily affected by obstacles.
The protocol may be incompatible between different devices.
If it is used for short distance connection between ears, it will consume too much power.
Convenience of wireless Digital hearing aids
Wireless capability may also result in digital hearing aid features that improve convenience. Some digital hearing aids may be set up so that when a you push a program button or change the volume control on one hearing device, the change is automatically implemented on the other side. Another feature made possible by wireless communication is the selection of a program button in one hearing aid and a volume control in the other hearing aid of the matched set. This arrangement requires less space for buttons on each device and reduces the amount of required changes by half. When the volume or program needs to be adjusted, the user only needs to touch one digital hearing aid and be confident that the other hearing aid will change automatically to match.
